Many people regard dogs as loving and loyal companions. Unfortunately, not all dogs are as friendly as they may seem.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control estimates that dog bites and strikes caused about 43 deaths per year over a 10-year span. Staying away from aggressive dogs should be a priority for everyone. You may need to be extra wary of the following breeds, which have become known for their potential to do severe damage.

1. Pit Bull

Medical study reviews show that pit bulls inflict the greatest number and the most serious injuries due to their large size, strong jaws, and background as fighting dogs. Their aggression levels have caused them to be banned in some jurisdictions. A permit may be required to have them in other municipalities.

2. Rottweiler

Rottweilers have a strong, muscular build and profound protective instincts. In the past, they have been considered more or just as dangerous as pit bulls. With over 300 pounds of bite pressure, Rottweilers are capable of fatal attacks if they perceive a person as a threat.

3. German Shepherd

Often used in law enforcement and military positions, German shepherds are brilliant and have a high prey drive. Consequently, they will likely chase and catch the object of their attention. When they do, their sheer size and bite force can leave an owner with a wrongful death case on their hands.

4. Doberman

Dobermans are also known for their high levels of intelligence. However, they can be extremely aggressive — even toward their owners. This dog’s bite force is around 300 pounds per square inch, which is even higher than pit bulls.

5. Wolf-Dog Hybrid

Many wolf-dog owners love the look of the breed. Unfortunately, they often aren’t able to domesticate it because of its unpredictable nature. Because of their wild background, these dogs can be aggressive and maintain a high prey drive, which means they may chase smaller animals and humans.

6. Bullmastiff

Bullmastiffs are a beloved breed because of their loyalty to their owners and families. They are willing to attack anything or anyone that poses a threat to those they protect. They can have a dog bite force of 200 to 300 pounds per square inch, putting them right on par with some of the most dangerous breeds in the world.

7. Siberian Husky

Huskies may seem cuddly, but looks can be deceiving. They’re very vocal dogs, yet they aren’t always social. They would rather be working and seeking out prey, and their instincts can lead them to become aggressive when they are bored or feel challenged.

8. Labrador Retriever

These dogs are often lovable and trusting of others. However, they are still a hunting breed. When this large, athletic dog feels threatened, it has no problem using all 200+ pounds per square inch of bite force to inflict serious injuries on a human or animal.

9. Alaskan Malamute

These dogs are a little friendlier than huskies. What makes Alaskan Malamutes dangerous is how large they are, weighing in at 90+ pounds. That size is accompanied by a strong bite that can do significant damage to small animals and humans.

10. Great Dane

Great Danes made the list because they weigh over 200 pounds. It’s hard for a human or animal to defend themselves against an attack from a dog that size. Though they are known as “gentle giants,” they can be territorial and protective.

Navigating Life After a Dog Bite

If you’ve been attacked by a dog, it’s a good idea to consult an attorney. A dog attack can be traumatic and leave you with physical pain, medical bills, and lost wages if you have to take time away from work to heal. The right personal injury lawyer can help you figure out whether you have a case and how to pursue compensation the right way.
